Solid Gold dog food products have very interesting names for a very good product. Things like Hund-n-Flocken, which is one of their adult dog foods (and is German meaning dog and flakes), Wolf King and Barking at the Moon which is one of two gluten free versions for dogs with food allergies.
The imaginative names shouldn't put you off though. The products are made from good quality natural ingredients and don't contain artificial preservatives. They do contain some added salt.
This is not the cheapest English Bulldog food on the market but it does seem to have good reviews from the majority of dog owners. The balance of proteins and carbohydrates means that it's satisfying and the pack lasts a reasonable length of time because you don't have to feed large quantities.
The gluten free Sun Dancer Grain and Gluten Free food uses tapioca and peas instead of grains and corn, with sweet potato to make it satisfying. The other gluten free version is called Barking at the Moon and is based on fish rather than chicken. Having the two versions allows you to give your pet a varied diet.
The Solid Gold Wolf King mix is based on bison as the primary meat ingredient with some fish included. It does not contain corn and the Amazon.com reviews noted that this helped dogs who suffered from allergies. Reviewers particularly liked the fact that there are no artificial preservatives
Owners who have switched to Solid Gold from other brands of dried food have noticed that their dog's coats have become smoother and glossier. One reviewer commented that as well as a better coat the dog was more attentive and had better concentration than before.
Here are some other high quality foods for English Bulldogs that you may want to think about.
Eagle PackMost reviewers on Amazon.com commented that their dogs really enjoy this food and having more than one variety helps them to give their pets different tastes and flavors. The dogs seem to really love the food and don't get bored from having the same food all the time.
As always, you should take care when changing your dog's food. Make the switch gradually to avoid upset stomachs and diarrhea. Start with a small pack to determine whether or not your dog likes it and also that it doesn't upset their tummy.
It's worth noting that in 2010 there were some issues that appeared to be caused by a move from the manufacturing plant in California to a factory in Missouri. Because the ingredients were sourced from different areas this resulted in slight changes to the food. As a result, some dogs suffered from digestive problems
In August 2011, the company added a second factory and again made changes to the ingredients and formula of some of the products. They added peas and eggs to the dried foods, which the company says makes the food easier to digest. However, it was also noted that this did not agree with all dogs, so exercise care if you think your pet may be allergic to any of these ingredients.
In addition, there have been some concerns about the use in the gluten free versions of canola oil and tomato pomace (which is a by-product of anything made from tomatoes, like ketchup, canned tomatoes, tomato juice and so forth). There are mixed opinions about the nutritional value of this particular ingredient.
