Innova EVO - What's the difference?

Innova EVO are two different foods manufactured by the same company.

Innova is a near human food that contains ingredients from the USDA food pyramid. A balanced human diet contains meats, dairy products, vegetables, fruits and grains, along with certain types of fat and oil. Innova dog foods contain the same.

You can choose from large and small bites, which allows you to control how fast your dog eats. The larger pieces need more chewing, which should slow them down a bit. Bulldogs get a lot of gas, so the less air they swallow when they eat the better it is for everyone!

Like all the major brands there are different mixtures to provide the right nutrition for your pet's age and condition. There's a regular adult, red meat mixture that contains different types of meat. As well as beef and lamb there's also buffalo and venison, both of which are very low fat.

If your bulldog is a little more portly than they should be then there's also a low fat version with a third less fat, more vegetable and fruits.

It's advertised as being for "less active dogs", which of course English Bulldogs most certainly are.

The Innova Puppy Food is made to the same high nutritional standards as the adult food. It's a slightly different balance of ingredients because puppies are growing very fast, so need a food that will give them the energy that they need.

At the opposite end of the scale the Innova Senior Dog food contains more fiber, to help prevent digestion problems, and additional minerals and vitamins to help older dogs stay healthy and active for as long as possible.

Slowing down means it's easy to pile on the pounds, so the extra fiber and almost one tenth fewer calories helps to control, or at least slow down, the weight gain.

If weight control isn't a problem then the Senior Plus Adult Dog Food may be more appropriate for your dog's need.

All the Senior Dog mixes contain Glucosamine and Condritin Sulfate, which can help to protect aging joints.

EVO

Evo comes from the same manufacturer (sometimes it's referred to as Innova Evo) but is grain free. That means it's a good choice if your bulldog suffers from food related allergies.

By using more protein the food is more like what dogs would have eaten in the wild, before they were domesticated by our hunter/gatherer forebears.

In the Turkey and Chicken variety, what's described as "poultry protein" is easy for dogs to digest. That means their bodies absorb more of it, so less clearing up for you to do in the yard. They like the taste too, so there's no waste food left in the bowls either.

More protein and less carbs means that your pets are less likely to put on unwanted weight. As obese pets, just like obese people, are a growing problem (in more ways than one) it's as well to be aware of this when choosing a dog food.

Evo doesn't have grains added, which is beneficial in two ways. One is that it reduces the risk of an allergic reaction. The other is that it minimizes the number of carbs, so helping to prevent weight gain.

This food is classed as a raw food diet too, which can have many health benefits.

It's not the cheapest on the market, but according to reviews on Amazon.com even very fussy dogs will eat it. Many reviewers commented on the fact that it reduced the amount of poop that they had to clean up.

However, just as with other brands, it does not suit all dogs. The high protein content can, in some cases, cause health problems and/or stomach upsets. You should get advice from a vet if you have any concerns about your pet's diet.

Like the Innova reviewers though, many expressed concerns about the company being taken over by Proctor and Gamble in June 2010 and whether the quality of the products would remain the same, so you'll need to make your own choice whether or not to use Innova EVO.
