English Bulldog Grooming

English Bulldog grooming is pretty simple and basic compared to other dog breeds but the Bulldog grooming that is required, is very important. As we have mentioned previously, the English Bulldog is not a high maintenance breed. This is a big plus, as it means no trips to a professional groomer which equals money saved in your pocket. Even though no professional services are needed for grooming, there are a few things required by your English Bulldog that you, the owner, must attend to. These would include brushing, bathing, trimming nails and cleaning those famous Bulldog wrinkles.

Brushing Your English Bulldog

The first step in proper English Bulldog grooming is brushing. Brushing your English Bulldog on a regular basis is very important. Every time you brush, dirt and debris are removed from the dog's coat. If this debris were to remain, it could possibly cause allergic reactions to the sensitive skin associated with the English Bulldog.

Also, by brushing your Bulldog, natural oils in the skin and coat are activated and distributed. This results in a shiny, healthy coat. We recommend brushing your English Bulldog at least 3 to 5 times a week using a soft bristle or rubber brush. Finally, brush both with the grain and against the grain for better coverage and effectiveness.

Bathing Your English Bulldog

Another aspect of English Bulldog grooming is bathing. Bathing your English Bulldog should be kept at a minimum because it can dry out the skin and strip your dog's coat of it's natural oils. If you brush your English Bulldog on a regular basis, then bathing will not be required as often.

Whenever a bath is needed, use a deep sink or bathtub filled half-way with lukewarm water. Always keep water levels below the English Bulldog's mouth and lower jaw. Before you wet the coat, place dry cotton balls gently in both ears so that no water accidentally gets into the ear canals. Next, thoroughly saturate your English Bulldog's coat with water starting at the neck and working back to the tail. DO NOT get water on the face. You will clean the face later with a wet washcloth. At this point, lather up a gentle, tearless, dog shampoo in your hands and then work it throughout your Bulldog's coat, paying special attention to the body wrinkles, legs, feet, belly, tail and genital areas of your English Bulldog. After the shampoo is applied, you will need to rinse completely with fresh warm water and then rinse again. Any shampoo residue left behind can irritate English Bulldog skin.

Next you will need to clean the face, including those delicate English Bulldog wrinkles. Take a clean, wet washcloth with NO SOAP OR SHAMPOO and gently wipe around the Bulldog's eyes, nose, outer ears and inside/outside the wrinkles. Once again, never put soap or shampoo on your English Bulldog's face and never pour water directly on this area as well. You can now towel dry your English Bulldog and remove the cotton balls.

Trimming Nails On Your English Bulldog

Another very important aspect of English Bulldog grooming is nail trimming. Most English Bulldogs will need to have their nails trimmed at least twice a month, perhaps more with puppies. Nails should be trimmed as short as possible above the quick because if nails get too long, they can cause the Bulldog's toes to spread out unnaturally. When trimming nails on your English Bulldog, use either dog nail clippers or a grinder. Always cut or grind just to the curve of the nail above the quick. The quick is where all the nerves are located. If you cut into the quick, you will know it! Your English Bulldog will let out a yelp and you will see blood coming from the nail.

Cleaning Wrinkles On Your English Bulldog

Last, but not least, is the cleaning of wrinkles on your English Bulldog. Bathing your Bulldog is not the only time to clean wrinkles. This actually should be done everyday. The area inside the Bulldog's wrinkles can trap moisture and debris. This in return becomes an ideal breeding ground for unhealthy bacteria that can eventually lead to infection. To prevent this from happening, clean the wrinkles, inside and out, daily with a wet washcloth. Remember to never use soap or shampoo on the facial wrinkles. After cleaning those famous English Bulldog wrinkles, gently dry them with a blow dryer set to low or cool heat.
