Dermatitis itches.
In fact, it makes ME itch just to think about it!
If your pet is constantly scratching, there's a good chance that it has it in some form or other. Below are some of the commonest types.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
We are NOT vets. These pages are for information only. If you have ANY concerns about your pet's health conditions you should take them to the local veterinarian for examination and treatment.
Other Health Conditions
Brachycephalic SyndromeAllergic reactions to flea bites are, more often than not the main cause of this condition. Make sure that your pet has regular treatments to protect against fleas.
Fleas love to be warm and comfortable, so inside your nice warm, heated home is perfect for them. What more could you ask for? Comfortable surroundings and food on tap.
They breed at a very fast rate, so treatment and eradication are essential. Consult your local vet for advice on the best treatment for your dog and take measures to prevent the fleas from reproducing.
You should only buy flea treatment products from licensed outlets. Some of the products available on the Internet are from the black market and are being sold illegally.
Things to be aware of:
This is also sometimes called "hot spots". These sore places appear when the dog has a flea bite, a parasitic infection, an allergy to dust or, less commonly, an injury that is irritating them. They lose the hair around the sore place and often lick it until it's raw and bleeding.
First port of call in treating this problem is to ensure that the animal doesn't have fleas and has regular flea prevention treatments.
If you're sure that fleas aren't causing it then take the dog to the vet. Most treatments will need to be prescribed by a licensed professional.
Interdigital means "between the toes". This is an itchy problem that can get out of control if you're not careful.
The dog gets an infection between his toes and because it hurts and is itchy he keeps licking the toes. Then the infection gets worse and the area fills with pus.
This is similar in some ways to the Interdigital Dermatitis. The folds and wrinkles on your English Bulldog's face are excellent dirt collectors. Dirt inside a fold of skin that is moist and doesn't get much air causes irritation, which can lead to a full blown infection.
Fleas don't really like human blood so will only bite if they are desperate.
If a human is getting bitten by fleas it means there are a huge number of them and your pets definitely have a problem.
Dogs can get fleas from cats, so make sure you treat the cats as well as the dogs.
