Bulldog Health, Bulldog Stink and Bulldog Eyeballs

by English Bulldog Nation Staff

Nicole, thanks for your English Bulldog puppy questions and concerns.
First of all, let us put your mind at ease. The Bulldog is a generally healthy breed. But, just like any other type of dog, there are certain health issues that the Bulldog is more susceptible to. You can find out more about these on our Bulldog Health and Bulldog Health Problems pages. That being said, most of these English Bulldog health problems can be a non issue if you purchase from a responsible and reputable Bulldog breeder. If you choose to go a different avenue, such as through the classifieds ads or through a backyard breeder, then you are asking for trouble and really taking your chances.

The terrible English Bulldog odor that you are referring to probably isn't coming from the wrinkles at all. This famous and very common Bulldog smell, or stinch, is caused by the anal glands filling up with fluid. If the dog doesn't empty them on his own, they will just keep filling up until they get full and this is when they start to stink. At this point, it is up to the owner to express the glands at home or you can have your vet take care of it for you.

English Bulldogs do slobber and drool quite a bit, especially after eating and drinking. This can be messy but it's a small inconvenience for those of us that love and respect the breed. By the way, Bulldogs do fart a lot also. Didn't want you to be surprised just in case you do decide to purchase one someday.

Finally, yes it's true, English Bulldog eyeballs can pop out of place but it is pretty rare. The reason for this is because the Bulldog's eye sockets are very shallow. A hard slap on the back of the head or a strong yank on the collar could cause the Bulldog's eyeballs to become detached. This condition can be repaired by surgery.
